Parker Cruse despises cheaters. It might have something to do with her boyfriend sleeping with her twin sister. After a wedding day prank involving a strong laxative, that ends the already severed relationship between the twins, Parker decides to grow up and act twenty-six.

Step One: Move out of her parents’ house.

Step Two: Find a job. Opportunity strikes when she meets her new neighbor, Gus Westman. He’s an electrician with Iowa farm-boy values and a gift for saying her name like it’s a dirty word. He also has a wife. Sabrina Westman, head of a successful engineering firm, hires Parker as her personal assistant. Driven to be the best assistant ever, Parker vows to stay focused, walk the dog, go to the dry cleaners, and not kiss Gus-again.

Step Three: Don’t judge.

Step Four: Remember- when life happens, it does it in a heartbeat.

MY REVIEW

When Life Happened by Jewel E. Ann
This is the section where I put the H/h names, but I really can’t… I can’t explain it either. All I can say is PARKER!!!
5 Stars all the way!!!

Step One: Buy e-book because Pam Godwin recommended it to me and told me NOT to read any of the reviews… apparently there are still DICKS out there who put spoilers in their reviews without any warning! Incidentally, Pam was freaking way the fuck out about this book and she was only 40% into it.

Step Two: Find out Jewel E. Ann is at the same signing we’re at (Penned Con 2017) and I make my way over to her table to buy a signed copy of said book. Did I mention I went back a second time to buy another copy to give away on Rough Draft Book Blog?

Step Three: Sit my ass in a comfy chair and get down to the nitty gritty of reading this wild book… Holy shit! Can’t peel face away from book…

Step Four: Read said book in one day because I couldn’t freakin’ put the damn thing down. And now I completely appreciate Pam’s fangirling over Ms. Ann and this fanfuckingtastic tale!

I am in love with this book, this story, and all its characters! When I finished reading it I was satisfyingly content. Ms. Ann brought these characters to life in a way that connected directly to my heart from the very beginning.

Parker is a conundrum of emotions. She’s fucked up from the past and the future’s not looking too bright at the moment. I get now why when I asked Pam to describe this book, she kinda stuttered a bit and shrugged her shoulders. There’s not much I can say without giving too much away.

This is definitely not a light hearted read. It’s not dark either. Shit, what the hell am I trying to say? It’s very serious and penetrating yet laced with enough humor to put an occasional smile on your face. The storyline is so enthralling that by the time you reach the inevitable plot twist, you’ll be too captivated to turn back. At least I was. And it doesn’t stop there! Sit down, strap in, and get ready for a bumpy ride.

This is my first Jewel E. Ann book, but it won’t be my last. I love the way she throws down the words and makes them all dance across my heart! Fantastic read!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jewel is a free-spirited romance junkie with a quirky sense of humor.

When she’s not donning her cape and saving the planet one tree at a time, she enjoys yoga with friends, good food with family, rock climbing with her kids, watching How I Met Your Mother reruns, and of course…heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, panty-scorching novels.

Review: A Beautiful Catastrophe by Katheryn Kiden

For two years Shay Daniels has been stuck in the past—stuck in a pain so deeply overwhelming that she constantly feels as if she’s drowning. A chance meeting gives her her first breath of fresh air, but it could be her final downfall.

Devastating pasts.

Uncertain futures.

Life is supposed to move forward, but what if all it does is revolve in a heartbreaking circle?

What if every step you take toward making yourself whole again only leads you closer to another beautiful catastrophe?

MY REVIEW

A Beautiful Catastrophe by Katheryn Kiden
Shay & Deacon
BEAUTIFUL AND BREATH TAKING
5 Catastrophic stars

Brace yourselves, this one is catastrophic and unpredicted. This is a love story for the ages. It’s warmth and powerful words will take you on a journey so shattering yet rewarding that your heart will never be the same. It’s profound, it’s tragic, and yet it’s even comical at times. I was glad I got to read this one. I’m sure there will be people out there that will knock this story for the simple fact that it’s not all hearts and flowers. Well, get a clue peeps.. LIFE is NOT all hearts and flowers. This book is amazing! I am forever changed after reading this.

Shay is suffering from the loss of a loved one and recuperating from a heart transplant. She’s a lost soul, wondering through life without any direction. She believes herself to be not worthy of the new life she’s been given. Her life is about to take on a whole new meaning…

Enter Deacon! Deacon is a doctor at the hospital Shay goes to have her new ticker checked up on. He is also suffering a great loss and therefore he is also going through the motions of life almost the same way Shay is. When their two worlds collide will they explode into a million pieces or will they be the glue that mends their broken lives back together?

The supporting character cast isn’t too large. Tyler is Shay’s doctor and also Deacon’s BFF. He and his wife Mia are very compassionate and caring to both Shay and Deacon, but also, very witty as well. The only other supporting character that bares mentioning is August, Shays friend. He’s there for her when she needs to release some anger.

The storyline is absolutely perfect. The characters prevailing and relatable. The tension is a slow build, but oh so damn worth it. The pacing is an even keel and the writing style effortless to read. This is my first Katheryn Kiden book, but it won’t be my last. Loved it!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Katheryn was born in Maine and has lived there her entire life. Growing up, she was the only girl out of five children. Out of four loving, but hard-assed, brothers she has been set on fire TWICE, shot at, left with a burning car and a five gallon container of gas, scared out of her mind every time they got behind the wheel, and has enough hilarious stories and amazing memories to fill a million books. It made her independent and every female character she writes reflects strength and independence.
Katheryn books are full of page turning suspense, humor, and enough steam to overheat your e-reader.
“There are no weak women, just weak moments.”

MY REVIEW

Incentive by Pam Godwin
Decker and Laynee
I DIDN’T WANT THIS TO END
5 HOLY MOLY STARS

I loved this book from the very beginning. I was intrigued to say the least when this spin-off “Kindle World” thingy from Aleatha Romig’s Infidelity series came about and when Pam Godwin decided to write one… well, holy hell… I was on it like white on rice. Pam wrote a story that’s not only good, but believable. Most stories are about a rich dude and a down on her luck chick… Not this one. This one is the opposite. Decker is down on his luck and offered that chance of a lifetime to finally get himself out of hock and have some bank to boot.

Decker is struggling to make ends meet and keep his “meat” safe from pushy, sexually harassing bosses! When he’s approached by a patron of the bar he works at to check into this life changing possibly, of course he’s intrigued. He vows to only show up for the interview, but things move so quickly before he knows it, he’s been paired up with a client.

Laynee is one of those characters you pull for and love to pieces. She’s scarred inside and out! She lives each day in her little protective bubble and she “thinks” she has control. Little does she know her world is about to undergo some major renovations.

This book is not only comical, sensual, and heartbreaking, but it’s inspirational. The things each of these characters teaches each other and the things they taught me will forever be branded on my heart. The storyline is dark, but not too dark. The pacing is perfect and keeps you moving along. The writing style is superb and why wouldn’t it be, it’s Pam Freakin’ Godwin for fucksake. Nice job Pam… I loved it!

Java, tobacco, and dark romance novels are her favorite indulgences, and might be considered more unhealthy than her aversion to sleeping, eating meat, and dolls with blinking eyes.

Review: You’re the Only One by E.M. Abel

Sky and Dillon became best friends bonded through struggle, heartbreak, and a promise to get away from it all.

Together they move to New York to pursue their passions. Dillon is a singer/songwriter looking for his big break while Sky wants nothing more than to become a top fashion designer.

Years later, they’re still chasing their dreams. Their friendship has endured jealousy, insecurity, disappointments, and even open relationships.

But can they survive falling in love?

MY REVIEW

You’re the Only One by E.M. Abel
Dillon and Sky
NEARLY LOST MYSELF IN THIS BOOK
5 STARS

So, this is my first E.M. Abel book and what a book to pop my cherry on. I’ve always loved rock stars and musicians, but this one is a little bit different. He’s not rich and famous. She’s not a groupie! They are best friends pursuing their dreams in the big apple. Best friends that seriously needed each other in the worst way, but took forever to figure that out!

Dillion is quite a guy. He’s actually a great guy! His heart is genuine and his motives are always intentional. He struggles every day with putting down the “right’ lyrics and finding his happy medium when it comes to his dreams, dating, and everyday life. Now, his BFF Sky seems more outgoing. She’s willing to try things out of her comfort zone, but still looks back at what could be or should be. Sometimes I wanted to grab both of them and just shake the shit outta them and say “OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE,” but no such luck… yelling at my kindle didn’t do shit!

I was pleasantly surprised at the conclusion of the book. Although there were parts that made me want to rip my hair out and parts that pulled on my heart strings, I was delighted with the outcome. This story is real… like it could happen to you! I giggled, I sobbed, and I swooned. Be prepared to feel a conundrum of emotions! I will be reading more of Ms. Abel in the future.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

E.M. Abel was born and raised a Marine Corps brat. She spent a large portion of her life moving and living in her mother’s home country, Japan. As a result, she gained independence and a unique perspective on the world. The youngest of three girls, E.M. Abel spent a lot of time alone in her room writing or sketching in her journals and dreaming up stories. Growing up, she wrote poems, short stories and articles for her high school newspaper. She also fell in love with art and discovered her deep need for self-expression.

Now, a Navy wife with two small children of her own, she still loves being creative and most of all translating her stories into novels. E.M. Abel, now referred to as E or Em by her friends and readers, can often be found with her headphones on jamming out to punk rock, in a chair getting tattooed or cooking dinner for her kids and attending gymnastics practice. No matter what she’s doing in her life, she’s always sure to do it her way.
